Cardrona is a family favourite for good reason. One of the best Wānaka ski fields for families, especially with young kids or mixed abilities, there are slopes for everyone. From a cosy chondola to wide beginner areas with the “magic carpet”, it’s a great intro to snow sports.
There’s also a brilliant ski school programme and even a crèche for under-fives (keep an eye out for them practicing on tiny skis – it’s adorable). For older kids and teens, the terrain parks are a hit, perfect for anyone getting into freestyle skiing or snowboarding.
On the other side of the lake, with some of the world’s best ski field views, is Treble Cone. This is the mountain has the most scenic learners slope in the region, and plenty of free-style terrain for confident young skiers and snowboarders. With steeper terrain, bigger runs, and famous off-piste areas, it’s a favourite for families who want to get a little more adventurous.
One of the best things about Wānaka with kids is that time off the mountain never feels like second best. Our town itself is packed with family activities that are worth carving out a day to enjoy.
Cinema Paradiso might sound like a simple rainy-day activity, but once you step inside, you’ll see why it’s become a local institution. Mismatched couches, warm cookies served during intermission, and a quirky atmosphere make it a family favourite.
For an indoor-outdoor option, mini golf at Crossfire is always an easy win before warming up with pastries and warm drinks at Pembroke Patisserie. If your family takes hot chocolates seriously, Scroggin is famous for homemade marshmallows, while Patagonia has a melted chocolate version that’s as decadent as it sounds.
There are countless short walks in Wānaka that are little-leg friendly, even in winter. The lakefront tracks, Waterfall Creek walk, and the Mount Iron loop all deliver big scenery without needing a huge commitment.
For a slightly different way of exploring, try a wander around the Wānaka Lavender Farm. Even if you’ve been before it feels completely different in winter, especially with a Lavender tea to keep you warm. Frosty mornings and mountain views, combined with friendly farm animals, is a win any day.
Alpine Archery is another surprisingly fun family activity. It’s competitive enough for older kids and parents, but still beginner-friendly, making it an easy way to add something a little different to your holiday.
Families wanting even more outdoor adventure can visit Kind Farm South to meet rescued animals, saddle up for a horse trek through the high country, explore biking trails around the lake, or head off-road on a 4WD backcountry tour. There’s even opportunities to volunteer as a family – a great way to connect to the area and give back. With so many options, no-one can get bored.

For easy family dinners, burgers at Red Star are always popular, while Kai Whakapai keeps things relaxed right on the lakefront, with local tap beers for the parents and live music for all. If everyone’s running low on energy, Wānaka’s food trucks are perfect for something quick and warm before heading back to your accommodation. Just don’t forget to grab an ice cream from Black Peak or Patagonia before you head home.
