After a day on Wānaka ski fields, those aching legs yearn for the après experiences waiting back in town.

The body may be weary but the excitement is still high, making the hardest decision whether to skip straight to some TLC or keep the vibes going over dinner or a drink.  Whether you choose to  debrief and share stories in a cosy bar or catch the last of the light from the sauna, you’re spoilt for recovery choice once the boots are off.

Wellness and recovery

When you’ve spent a day flying around the slopes, there is something special about slowing down. Take the chance to relax and unwind as the sun dips behind the mountains – a view you can enjoy from inside one of Wānaka’s saunas, doubling recovery with a moment of peace. The Secret Sauna offers a traditional wood-fired barrel sauna experience, with arguably some of the best sauna views in the world. Their Lake Hāwea location sits right on the shore of the turquoise lake, with the peaks framed like a postcard through the window, or try their Cardona location (opening 13 June) for a mid-sauna cold plunge surrounded by snow-topped peaks. For an experience closer-to-town, try one of the guided or social sauna sessions at The Sauna Wānaka – another traditional woodfired option – found down on the beautiful Outlet track, with a cold plunge into Lake Wānaka.

If you feel like going as hard on your recovery as you did on the slopes, try a dedicated recovery space –like the Alpine Suite at Massage in Wānaka – to help your body naturally heal, with an infrared sauna, Wānaka’s only steam room , and a traditional Japanese soak tub. There is also the Traveller’s Rest and Recovery zone at  Active Massage  – complete with a Finnish sauna, cold plunge, and Stoked hot tub – ready to boost circulation and recovery.

If stretching out feels more like your kind of recovery, step into Hot Yoga Fusion Wānaka and get bendy in a 30–36 degree room, allowing for deeper movement and flow. And for those who’d rather fully switch off, lay back and let the experts melt away the tension with a professional massage from one of our many local experts. Whatever you choose, Wānaka’s wellness and recovery options will have you refreshed and ready for what the next day brings.

Bars and Breweries

Wanting to keep the buzz of a good day on the hill going? The first post-mountain stop for many skiers and snowboarders, is an après bevvie. Wānaka’s beer scene has many great spots to settle in after a day on the snow, especially if you know where to look.

Wānaka Brew Bar is THE place to watch the sunset over the lake as it disappears behind Roy’s Peak. You could even do it with a slice in hand, as they share their space with Sal’s pizza. For something a little more classy but just as cosy, head to Verve wine bar. Don’t be shy – despite being serious about good drinks, they don’t take themselves too seriously.

For the best of both worlds, lake-side Kai Whakapai is a local fave for a reason – you can’t beat an evening under a heater with their classic pizza with a crisp local lager or wine. A little further down, Lake Bar keeps things social and lively, ideal for an afternoon that naturally rolls into evening, while Water Bar is the place where you can get both a fun cocktail or a classic tap beer, keeping the whole crew happy. To continue that revelry, head to Cork Bar. They keep the vibes high with seasonal cocktails, a huge wine, beer and spirits list, and live music on weekends.

If you’re in the mood to explore a little further, Rhyme & Reason Brewery offers something a bit more experimental, with small-batch brews poured just metres from where they’re made. We recommend trying whatever’s new and fresh on tap for a tasty surprise. Nearby at Ground Up Brewing, things move at a slower pace for those who like to enjoy the moment – embrace it with a tasting paddle and take your time.

After non-stop activities, nothing hits the spot like a good dinner – whether it’s from one of Wānaka’s delicious food trucks or tucked inside one of our many local eateries.  If you’ve been up Cardrona ski fields and aren’t ready for the day to end, the Cardrona Hotel delivers classic pub fare done well, with a solid meal by the fire and views of the mountain you just conquered.

Closer to town let your tastebuds choose for you – from rich and comforting handmade pastas at Francesca’s and Bambina, to delicious Mediterranean sharing plates at Sofi. Mexican Paloma is must for freshly made, wood-fired flavours, while Edgewater offers a more traditional but ever-changing seasonal menu.

For something a little more casual but just as delicious, head to FuDog for asian-fusion on the balcony, or visit the lineup of Wānaka Food Trucks. There you’ll find everything from loaded burgers to fresh and healthy roti wraps — ideal for those nights when all you want is something warm, fast.
