In Wānaka, we refuel for the next adventure where the food is hearty, the brews are cold, and the company is even better.

Quick bites and brews are an essential after a big day on the trails, and though Wānaka might be small, we pack a mighty punch when it comes to our local food scene.

From legendary burger joints to craft breweries, Lake Wānaka pizza bars and international eateries, here are some of our favourite spots to refuel, relax, and recharge post-adventure, whether you’re eating on the go or settling in for a warm feed.

Our Picks:

1. Red Star Burger Bar

Dietaries: vegetarian, vegan, and GF options available.

Thinking burgers? Think Red Star. A key part of the Wānaka woodwork for more than 20 years, Red Star has a whole range of hearty burgers stacked with homemade sauces, available for dine-in or takeaway. Whatever your burg of choice, don’t pass on the kumara fries.

Their $15 Pint & Slice deal runs daily from 3pm-7pm, and even longer on Thursday’s Quiz Nights for a cheeky pint and the best American-style pizza in Wānaka.

How to dine sustainably in Wānaka

Eating out is a great way to connect and refuel with friends, strangers and the local community – but there’s a few key ways to reduce the environmental impact of your feast. It’s the little changes that make a big difference, and with environmental sustainability so important to our community, we’re here to make it easy for both locals and visitors to help protect our land. Here’s how.

  1. Don’t SUC. Single-use cup, that is. Wānaka is well on its way to being SUC-free, and it’s one of the easiest ways to reduce unnecessary plastic or paper waste during your morning coffee. Bring your own keep-cup if you’re grabbing coffee on the go, or sit for a beat and enjoy your coffee in house.
  2. Eat in, eat slow. If you’ve got the time, eating in rather than taking away is a great way to minimise waste, soak up the vibe, and get to know the locals.
  3. BYO Containers. Planning a lakeside picnic or just no time to sitt? Instead of using single-use takeaway containers from your eatery of choice, bring your own container to fill  to reduce unnecessary packaging.
  4. Refill your bottles. Rather than buying plastic bottles in town, refill your reusable bottle at the free natural spring on Ardmore Street.
  5. Get on yer bike. One perk of being a small town is that it’s easy to walk or bike between bites and brews. Ditch the carbon emissions that come with a car ride, soak up the balmy afternoon light, and put those pins to good use.
  6. Give back to the land. While you’re in town, there are loads of volunteering opportunities that allow you to practically care for the land you’re adventuring in. Or if you’re short on time, making a donation to local environmental organisations like Love Wānaka is a great way to support environmental protection in our region.
