Reel South Charters’ private charters give a group exclusive use of the boat and skipper for a day on Lake Wānaka planned entirely around them. Island walks, sightseeing, fishing, a special celebration on the water or a mix of everything can all be built into the day, with the skipper shaping the route to suit the group and the conditions.
Private charters are available as three-hour or six-hour bookings, with departures at 9am and 2pm. A three-hour charter is priced at $1,850 and a six-hour charter at $3,300 (New Zealand dollars) for the whole boat, for up to six guests. Other trip lengths can be arranged by phone.
Island options include Mou Waho, Te Peka Karara/Stevensons Island and Ruby Island. On Mou Waho, guests can walk up through the predator-free reserve to Arethusa Pool, a lake on an island in a lake, with sweeping views across Lake Wānaka to the Southern Alps.
Private charters are a step up from the standard tours, with upgraded tea, coffee and snacks, along with a premium platter and catered lunch prepared by Federal Diner, a local Wānaka café. The McLay has an enclosed, heated cabin, so the day stays comfortable whatever the weather.
Private charters suit families, couples, friends travelling together, corporate groups and special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and proposals. Charters depart from Lakeside Road in central Wānaka, a short walk from town. Trips are only cancelled when the wind makes it unsafe to be on the water, in which case guests can choose to reschedule or receive a full refund.
